All fencers should try to be aware of what is going on around them. Bouts may be going on behind or in front of you. Never run through or near fencers mid-fight – especially if you are not wearing a mask.
WEAPON SAFETY
Always keep the point down when you are not fencing. If you are not using your sword put it down.
Do not wave the sword around – or carry it under your arm with the point sticking backwards. Also do not wave the sword around when putting on your mask – put the sword down while putting the mask on. Never hit people with a weapon when they are not wearing a mask. If a sword breaks, ALL FENCERS nearby should cease fencing. Broken swords are much more likely to injure fencers. If you see someone fencing with a broken sword, DRAW ATTENTION TO IT IMMEDIATELY.
All steam foils (non-electric) are equipped with a rubber button on the end. Weapons should be inspected when first used to insure that the button is firmly attached and not worn through.
CLOTHING SAFETY
Always wear protective clothing when fencing. This means: Plastron – made of a single piece of material covering your heart on your weapon side. Jacket – do not use obviously holed or sub-standard jackets and draw attention to any problems. A zipper should not be on your weapon side. Mask – this should not have any obvious weak points or dents – Bibs should cover the Neck and not expose it. Glove – on the weapon hand. The Velcro should be fastened properly. Chest protectors for ladies. Always insure that the clothing is worn properly, with zips fastened and Velcro pads fastened. Before fencing makes sure that your partner is wearing their clothing correctly.
WARMING UP
Before fencing, fencers should always warm up. This is particularly true for beginners who may not be used to some movements.
